CARD ONE:
This card represents you and your question, as well as the primary influences surrounding you. A court card here might refer to you or some dominant person.
The Chariot

  • Clear purpose. Determination. Being able to carry on.
  • Self-assertion. Centeredness. Control. Conquest. Success. Dominion. Inner peace. Triumphant progress. Single-mindedness.
  • Ambition. Mastery. Courage. Skill. Energy to fight for a goal. Great effort and achievement.
  • The drive for success. Self-control. A journey. News.
  • Victory resulting from personal effort. Control over conflicting forces. Ability to stay on top.
  • Steering a middle course. Balancing conflicting emotions. Charging ahead through struggle and conflict. Coming out on top. Strength of will. Going with the flow.
  • Communications. Transportation. Vehicles. A new car.
  • I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.

Situation and Advice:
Card represents force and control and is associated with the element of Water, through the sign of Cancer, as it deals heavily with emotions. This card shows emotional control; the power of the mind to shape the desires of the heart, and direct them to consequential manifestation. This is not the emotional control of the Emperor – he suppresses all emotion in favour of logic and reason – the charioteer knows emotions are not to be concealed, but trained and used to his advantage.

The triumph over both positive and negative emotions is shown by the two horses – black and white – pulling the Chariot. On their own, they would run wild and untamed in whichever direction they so chose, but here they move only forward – their power directed and focused by the charioteer holding the reins. The chariot cannot move without horses to pull it, just as we cannot function without our emotions to drive us – but without the control of the charioteer, the horses would run wild, just as emotions can when unchecked and uncontrolled. Balance is required.

This card personifies discipline – necessary to gain control over emotions –that is why a military symbol appears on this card. Purpose of the harsh conditions of the military is to develop the will and ability to control emotions and to put them to productive use on the battlefield. Only through mastering your self can you expect to achieve mastery over others and your environment. The wisdom and glory gained through conquering your enemies is nothing compared to the self-esteem you build through defeating your inner fear – internal enemies are often tougher to defeat than external ones, and thus teach you more.

Through the application of emotional force, directed by will and intelligence, you can learn to achieve your goals and desires more quickly. In the Thoth Tarot, written across the canopy of the chariot is the word ‘Abracadabra’ – seems at first blush foolish. There is no magic or illusion involved here, the word is Hebrew and it translates to something like ‘what I have said will be done’ or ‘as it is said, so it shall be’. And thus is the spirit of this card verbalized.

The appearance of this card shows a need to take control of your emotions, and instead of wasting energy complaining and grieving, use that energy to take action and make changes in your world. Fear will cripple you, unless you acknowledge it and face it. Then use your fear constructively.

This type of control is not limited to negative emotions, in relationships the Chariot shows how idle infatuation can be transformed into passion and confidence. Through controlling your emotions, you will learn to control yourself.

This card suggests a need to stay centred and take control of competing forces to carry on – you are capable of a calm sense of command, provided you steer a middle course through conflicting thoughts, feelings and wishes.

You may feel unable to speed up the outcome, so the best course of action is to go with the flow of the forces you have already set in motion. You will be able to stay on course after making a firm resolution and your strategy should be to move forward with determination and a clear sense of purpose. You will conquer your difficulties and emerge victorious. Generally whatever situation you asked about will resolve itself in your favour.

The Chariot can literally mean travel, buying a car or treating yourself to a new means of transport.

People:
Military persons, messengers, professional drivers, motorists, travelers.
Victors. Those at peace with themselves.

CARD TWO & THREE:

These cards represents your subconscious mind . They give information on the hidden influences which effect, but which you may not detect.

Two of Cups: (reversed)

  • Unrequited love. Incompatibility and lack of compassion. The departure of a loved one. Distrust, infidelity, arguments, misunderstanding, conflict. The violation of trust.
  • Imbalanced give and take. A broken agreement. Disharmony and resentment.
  • Contention, disputes, inequity, separation, divorce.
  • Breaking up is hard to do. Parting is such sweet sorrow. I hate you.

Situation and Advice:
You may be concerned about a separation from someone you care about. Perhaps you are involved in a situation of broken trust, rejection, inconsiderate behaviour, hurt feelings or a partnership has not lived up to expectations.

An atmosphere of disharmony surrounds you. You are resenting your partner’s selfishness and arguments ensue. You feel you are doing all the giving and your partner all the taking. It is wise to remember that superficial love never lasts.

In its upright position, this card is usually the card for soul mates, harmonious unions and balance. Reversed, this energy is shown in its negative and represents incompatibility and unbalanced emotions. If these unbalanced emotions are not dealt with, they will affect your health.

This card also suggests you have work to do within yourself. If you can see the light within yourself then you cannot help showing it to others. By releasing doubt and uncertainty we become able to love others without hesitation and without regret. When you stop telling yourself what you could be, you can start enjoying what you already are. And you can let others enjoy it too. A higher self-love will lead to a greater and more comprehensive love of others.

People:
An ex-partner. Someone who has violated trust. People who take without giving.

Prince of Pentacles:

  • Diligence, dependability, patience, perseverance, practicality, conventionality.

  • Attention to detail. Faithfulness, seriousness, loyalty, consideration and trustworthiness.
Simplicity of character. Careful planning pays off.
  • Enjoyment of simple pleasures. Propagation. Slow but sure. Time heals all wounds.
    You cant be too careful.

Situation and Advice:

Chances are you consulted the cards about issues of security – emotional, financial or physical. You may be on the verge of a new experience or undertaking. Support and comfort will come from many sources. A long-standing problem will be resolved in a positive manner.

Slow and steady progress assures success and your diligence and hard work will pay off. A loyal friend may come to your aid. You may travel in connection with business. If your question was indeed about starting something new, the Prince of Pentacles shows that the desire and ability is indeed there. But be careful, because in seeking what you want you may be more interested in tangible results than the feelings of others. If you asked about romance you can expect a steady, secure relationship with a faithful lover.

This card manifests in any of three ways – as an event you will experience, a person whom you will meet or have met, or as a part of yourself that needs to be developed and expressed.

As an event: this card shows a time when you will have to assume responsibility for your actions and take charge of the situation you have created. You might be given a new task or have to account for a past failure. Do not charge in head first, you will only hurt yourself. Assess the situation, and then strike decisively and implacably. Be persistent, until the outcome is in sight.

As a person, the Prince is strong, his word is as strong as his hand and he takes all his promises seriously. He likes to do things the old-fashioned way, but it could be said that his weakness is his lack of imagination and he despises people who cannot keep their heads out of the clouds.

This card shows that you must decide where your loyalties lie, once you have shown you can be trusted, you will never lose the people you have gained. Hard work produces the results you desire, if you are realistic in the pursuit of your goals. Leave nothing to chance, make plans and outline objectives. You have great potential for success if you stay firmly grounded.

People:

Sensible, conscientious, dependable people.

CARD FOUR & FIVE:

These cards represent your conscious mind .
They give information on your thoughts and feelings toward the nature of the question (which may/may not be in harmony with cards 2 & 3).

Temperance:

Keywords and Phrases:

  • Moderation, self-restraint. Prudence, tolerance and a balanced view point.
  • A sense of proper timing. Compromise. Compatibility. Morality.
  • Harmonious balance. Adaptation, mercy and a balanced expression of sexuality. Compassion, forgiveness and reconciliation.
  • Everything in moderation. One day at a time.

Situation and Advice:

Issues of prudence versus excesses in behaviour, including sexual activity, may be on your mind. You can now blend varied ingredients into a harmonious mixture. You need to slow down, reevaluate your position and remain open to compromise. Old wounds heal with the passage of time. Having a lifestyle that is optimistic to the point of believing yourself invincible will lead to problems – life seeks balance and if you are striving to be totally positive, you will be fighting the current all the way. Better to embrace moderation and go with the flow. Lesson – use your inner power to heal you, make you stronger and to achieve balance.

It is hard, at first, to see where Sagittarius, the ruling sign of this card, fits in. Sagittarius is an expansive sign and Temperance is, on a surface level, about “tempering.” It has been pointed out that the original pouring from cup to cup might have been about cutting wine with water. So this is a card about moderation. There is, however, another angle to the card, that of merging seemingly impossible opposites. Sagittarius, the centaur, merges beast and man into a unique creature. And then there is the bow and arrow, one moving, one stationary, working together to point the way.

Temperance may be, at first glance, a warning to you to “temper” their behavior, to cut your wine with water. But it may also be a reminder to you that seemingly irreconcilable opposites may not be irreconcilable at all. Belief that fiery red and watery blue cannot be merged may be the only thing standing in the way of blending the two. Change the belief, measure out each with care, and you can create an otherworldly violet.

This card really does seem to be less about moderation then about the Sagittarian desire to find a unified field theory, a way of blending opposites, achieving synthesis. In a reading, this card can mean that you sees two opposite camps (choices, belief systems, families, friends) and no way to unite them. But sometimes the only reason the two won’t blend is that we’re not taking the time, not measuring out the right amounts (you might, for example, be trying to merge two full families when blending has to occur bit by bit with individuals). It is also a reminder that a bow and arrow are useless apart, but together a formidable weapon. This card tells you that you CAN and should put thesis and anti-thesis together to get the even more useful synthesis. But it will take time, care, patience and experimentation. And also, yes, moderation.

  • Restriction. Disapproval. Dissolution of a partnership.

A life ruled by superfluous and artificial constraints and rules. Lack of commitment leads to a shaky relationship. A difference of opinion and a change in goals in a partnership leads to dissatisfaction and loss of tranquility. Tradition which leads to innate snobbery and superiority and exceptional and profound reliance upon ceremony, decorum and routine. A period of respite before successfully concluding a project.

Even in the reversed position the Four of Wands is generally a positive card but there is a greater price to pay for success. This card however also represents some hindrance or obstacle you have to overcome. You have too many ideas to act upon. Narrow them down to the most important and thereafter you will need to put more effort in to achieve your goal.

  • The world of grown ups. Self-assertion. Dealing with authority. The drive for achievement.
  • The impulse to create something of lasting value.
  • Rational thought. Mind over matter. Security. Head over heart.

Situation and Advice:

This card suggests than an overemphasis on domination in a romantic relationship is leading to loss of sensitivity and affection. You will have to confront the person that rules your life, in order to assert your status as a self-willed person.

The Emperor administers and governs the realm you wish to enter. You cannot achieve your dreams without this person’s blessing. An upright Emperor in a relationship question can be seen as the “head of the household”, a man who is all things to everyone – husband, father, primary breadwinner, chief executive officer.

The card is representative of leadership. Indicates authority and self mastery. Ability to control and direct sexual drive. Goals can be reached. Domination of intelligence and reason over emotion and passion. Patriarchal figure. Achievement. You need to be recognised as a strong figure of unquestioned achievement and authority. Focus your attention completely on your goal. You must not reveal your real plans, feelings or weaknesses to the person who is trying to dominate you. Status is vital.

In chaotic situations, the Emperor can indicate the need for organisation. Loose ends should be tied up, and wayward elements, harnessed. In situations that are already over-controlled, he suggests the confining effect of those constraints. The Emperor can represent an encounter with authority or the assumption of power and control. . He can also stand for an individual father or archetypal Father in his role as guide, protector and provider.

The emperor is the power of the government or a decision making body. Within yourself, there is also a force that governs your actions. These forces are will power and self control. You will have discussions concerning agreements, and sharing of responsibility. Someone could be lying or misrepresenting the facts. An opportunity will arrive that could be the foundation of a very successful future. Take control of your life, assert yourself in order to make a success of what you desire. Without control and self-mastery, you will continue to be dominated by others.

It is a card of heavenly favours and a sense of being blessed. If you are currently experiencing difficulties or have been depressed or unwell, the Star augurs healing. Your ability to let go of damaging memories has been strengthened by contact with your true self.

Hatred, envy, bitterness, and revenge have burned themselves out and no longer shadow your life or potential for future happiness. Now you are able to forgive and forget. Friendship is an important area governed by the Star. Your friends are especially precious to you now, and you may find their presence in your life a source of great happiness.

Illumination. You need to be the star of your “show” and experience a time of joy, wonder, hope and healing. Relax and re-establish your connection with your body and the illumination of spiritual realities. Dwell on the good. People have always looked to the stars as a source of inspiration and hope. There is something about their twinkling light that draws us out of ourselves and up into a higher plane. When we turn our eyes heavenward, we no longer feel the distress of earth. All the harshness and density of everyday life has been refined away leaving only the purest essence. After being exposed to the Star, we feel uplifted and blessed.

In readings, the Star is most welcome when grief and despair have overwhelmed us. In our darkest moments, we need to know that there is hope and that there is light at the end of the tunnel. The Star is the opposite of the Devil who strips us of our faith in the future. Card 17 holds out the promise that we can eventually find peace of mind. The Star also reminds us to open our heart and release our fears and doubt. If you have been holding back in any way, now is the time to give generously. It is important to remember that the Star is inspiring, but it is not a card of practical solutions or final answers. Truly without hope we can accomplish nothing, but hope is only a beginning. When you see Card 17, know that you are on the right track. Your goals and your aspirations are blessed, but to realise them, you must take positive action. Use the light of the Star to guide you in your efforts.

You will become aware of how successful and respected you are. You may attain a goal that brings lasting happiness, or you may win a reward. A successful person may be involved. It’s the call of destiny that motivates you or compels you to go on. Your desire is NOT in vain, and that which you are yearning for will ultimately find fulfilment. Courage, hope, and inspiration are in your life. Great love will be given and received. Wisdom, spiritual enlightenment, progress toward goals and knowing what these goals are.
